Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Department Director, supervises all the functions of one or more of the Engineering departments. Main responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing the work of Engineers in designated areas.

Responsibilities: Essential Duties

  • Manage the research, development, and preparation of specifications for improvements to existing and/or new products, processes, equipment, and technology.
  • Manage projects by developing a project schedule and team, tracking costs, preparing status reports, conducting team meetings, and communicating issues and progress to senior level management.
  • Manage cost savings and expansion projects.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to subordinates within the Engineering organization.
  • Manage the daily activities of all levels of Engineers and Engineering Aides/Technicians.
  • Prepare department budget.
  • Provide direction and technical decision making for management involving capital asset purchases and expenses for projects and/or strategic activities involving up to and in excess of $10MM (capital/expense/revenue potentials).
  • Prepare and present technical investigative reports including recommendations to senior level management.
  • Supervise all personnel in the unit for proper application of company policies and procedures and job performance.
  • Provides performance appraisal, employee coaching and counseling. Resolves conflicts and initiates disciplinary action when needed. Approves employee change status such as promotion, demotion, termination, etc.
  • Ensure adequate staffing (head count) and coordinates tasks for hiring of additional personnel. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and overseeing training of employees.
  • Supervise and direct contract personnel and outside vendors in the performance of contracted services.
  • High degree of both internal and external personnel interfaces.

Expertise: Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Will be responsible for all aspects of Managing the Machine/Mold fabrication Shop.
  • Managing all personnel requirements.
  • Developing the annual operating budget for the shop.
  • Developing the required capital equipment budget for the shop.
  • Responsible for writing capital requests and cost justifications for new shop equipment.
  • Develop proper shop structure, equipment and manning requirements to properly support the injection molds and automation equipment for our facility.
  • Evaluate shop practice efficiencies and productivity.
  • Develop our 3D machining capabilities and communication links within the Shop and Mold Design Group, along with proper data storage system.
  • Develop and compose standard operating procedures for the shop, as it relates to ISO and GMP practices.
  • Develop preventative maintenance and spare component programs for our injection molds.
  • Develop training requirements for the shop personnel as it relates to equipment operation; injection mold type and hot runner knowledge; and operating procedures for the shop.
  • Must have knowledge of all types of machining operations required to fabricate and maintain close tolerance fixtures; mold components; mold bases and automation equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of al type of injection molds and their functions (Two plate; Three plate, Stripper plate; Cam action; Unscrewing; cold runner and hot runner mold types).
  • Must have strong knowledge of the various types of hot runner systems as it relates to their design, fabrication and maintenance.
  • Computer skills; Microsoft Office; Microsoft Project; Microsoft Access; 2D and 3D cad skills and SAP is a plus.


Expertise: Qualifications - Experience/Training/Education/Etc


  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. Engineering) from four-year college or university and 10+ years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • College degree is preferred (Engineering/Plastics Engineering/Business Management) or equivalent training from a Technical School with related experience in the Plastics/Mold fabrication and Maintenance field.
